Sex Offender Camp in Georgia

William Hawkins, a convicted sex offender, leans on a tree next to his tent in an encampment of sex offenders in a wooded area of Marietta, Ga. on September 23, 2009. Nine people on the sex offender registry live in the camp. Georgia's strict law bans sex offenders from living, working or loitering within 1,000 feet of schools, churches, parks and other spots where children gather. This strategy seems to have backfired because it also bans them from shelters. A similar camp grew in South Florida for the same reason. In the case of the Georgia camp, the offenders were actually directed there by probation officers.(AP Photo/Greg Bluestein)
