Residents of Marseille, France, found themselves surrounded by garbage when trash collectors went on strike after learning that the city might terminate their contract. The strike ended on November 4, 2009, when the city agreed not to be put the contract out for bidding. By that time, 10,000 tons of garbage had accumulated on the streets. It was the city's worst garbage strike since the summer of 2003. (photo: SIPA via AP Images)
