First Guantanamo Prisoner to be Tried as Civilian

Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani of Tanzania arrived in New York to become the first Guantanamo detainee to be tried in a civilian court. He was captured in Pakistan in July 2004 and is charged in connection with the August 7, 1998, bombings of the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya. At his administrative review hearing at Guantanamo on February 8, 2007, Ghailani admitted to learning how to detonate explosives at an al Qaida training camp in Afghanistan, and he apologized to the families of the victims of the embassy bombings.
