Using an atomic force microscope (AFM), IBM researchers in Zurich have produced the first high-resolution image of the chemical structure of a single molecule. The molecule contained 22 carbon atoms and 14 hydrogen atoms, and the space between the carbon atoms was half a million times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. (photo: IBM Research Zurich)
