Perhaps it’s better that Republican Thom Tillis was elected to the Senate last fall. If he had lost, he might have had to find work in a restaurant.

Like many conservatives, Tillis, of North Carolina, says there are too many regulations burdening American businesses and some of them have got to go. That includes eliminating the state and local laws, recommended by the Food and Drug Administration, mandating that food workers hit the sink before going back to the kitchen.

But customers shouldn’t worry about getting sick. Tillis’ plan would include a requirement that restaurants post signs telling customers that the staff don’t have to wash up. That, according to Tillis, would cause people to stop patronizing the restaurant, which would then go out of business. Evidently, those kinds of signs aren’t burdensome.

But at least the free market would be killing off businesses, instead of over-regulation doing them in.
