Still the Most Dangerous City in the U.S.: Camden, New Jersey
The winner of the ignominious feat of being America’s most dangerous city is Camden, New Jersey, which is no stranger to the title.
The city of 77,000 residents has ranked at or near the bottom of safest cities to live in for more than 10 years now, according to CQ Press, an independent publishing company that ranks more than 400 cities based on statistics derived from Federal Bureau of Investigation data on violent and property crime.
Camden was labeled “most dangerous” in 2004 and 2005 before it managed some improvement in 2006 and 2007 (coming in at No. 5).
But things went south again in 2008, when it ranked No. 2. It won the “most dangerous” the following year, finished second in 2010, and then reclaimed the title again in 2011 and 2012.
Mayor Dana Redd insists things are getting better, now that policing is handled by the county rather than the city.
“It is always disappointing to see the city on the list, but Camden has many reasons to be optimistic of better days to come,” Redd said in a statement.
After Camden, the other U.S. cities rounding out the top 10 for most dangerous were:
Flint, Michigan
Detroit, Michigan
Oakland, California
St. Louis, Missouri
Cleveland, Ohio
Gary, Indiana
Newark, New Jersey
Bridgeport, Connecticut
Birmingham, Alabama
