  • Trump Deports JD Vance and His Wife

    Tuesday, April 29, 2025
According to aides who were present when Trump discussed the issue, but who choose to remain anonymous for fear of retribution, Trump said he was sick of Vance and wanted to fire him. “I wanted him to be my attack dog,” said Trump, “but he appears foolish on television. He dropped the college football trophy. He met with Pope Francis and the next day the pope died. Vance is toxic, and I don’t want him to come near me. He just doesn’t look as good on television as I thought he would.”   read more

    Friday, May 22, 2015
In a 3-2 decision, Chief Justice Margaret Workman said the plaintiffs were entitled to seek damages even though they themselves behaved illegally or immorally. Interestingly, “the majority noted that most, if not all, of the plaintiffs admitted their abuse of controlled substances occurred before they sought help at Mountain Medical Center,” according to the AP. Justice Allen Loughry, who dissented along with Justice Menis Ketchum, wrote: “There are no even remotely innocent victims here.”   read more

  • World Trade Organization Overrules U.S. Country-of-Origin Rules for Meat Products

    Thursday, May 21, 2015
WTO ruled that American regulations that require the meat industry to use country of origin labels (COOL) represent a violation of NAFTA. “This is just the latest example of how multinational companies use the global trade system to attack basic protections for U.S. consumers,” said Wenonah Hauter. “The meat industry has been trying – and failing – for years to get rid of COOL through the U.S. system, so it had to use unaccountable, unelected trade officials at the WTO to do its dirty work.”   read more

  • The $36 Million Marine Headquarters in Afghanistan that was never Used: Who Pocketed the Money?

    Thursday, May 21, 2015
The money never would have been spent had the Corps heeded the requests of then-Maj. Gen. Richard P. Mills, who said the headquarters wasn’t needed and that commanders could make do with other facilities. The building wasn’t even seen as something that would have been nice to have. “We certainly needed many things in those early days,” Marine Maj. Gen. Larry Nicholson said, “but we were very pleased with [current headquarters].” Neither Mills nor Nicholson got their way, however.   read more
  • House Subcommittee Sets Off Alarms over Funding for Criminal Research and Statistics

    Thursday, May 21, 2015
The subcommittee, led by Rep. John Culberson, voted to eliminate funding for the National Institute of Justice and the Bureau of Justice Statistics, two of DOJ’s most important research and statistics agencies. Experts said the plan was a terrible idea and would cripple the Justice Department’s research efforts. “During a period of national attention to police-community relations and prison reform, Congress should strengthen, not destroy, [these agencies]," said criminologist Richard Rosenfeld.   read more
  • Advocates from Left and Right Agree: End ATF as an Independent Entity

    Thursday, May 21, 2015
ATF has been criticized repeatedly in recent years for botched operations. Its Operation Fast and Furious embarrassment allowed thousands of guns to pass into criminal hands in the U.S. and Mexico. ATF also was exposed by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for a local operation in which agents lost guns, arrested the wrong people and used a mentally disabled man as a source. These messes and others led the Center for American Progress to call for ATF’s elimination and merger with the FBI.   read more
  • Wyoming Criminalizes taking Soil Samples and “Ecological” Photos on Public Lands

    Wednesday, May 20, 2015
The Republican-dominated state has adopted a new law which outlaws the collecting of ecological data on private and public lands. Violations can result in a year of prison time and fines of $5,000. It also makes any samples inadmissible as evidence in court, even if they show environmental hazards. The law prohibits photos and soil samples used for ecological purposes, even in state and national parks. Opponents say it is so broad, it would prevent taking photos at Yellowstone National Park.   read more

    Wednesday, May 20, 2015
Robert Doggart, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress last year, has accepted a plea deal from federal prosecutors in which he admitted to interstate threats. A wiretap revealed he was plotting with a private militia to carry out a terrorist attack on a Muslim community. In one call, Doggart reportedly said, “we’re gonna be carrying an M4 with 500 rounds of ammunition...a pistol with 3 extra magazines and a machete. And if it gets down to the machete, we will cut them to shreds.”   read more
  • Suicide Rate for Black Children Jumps as it Falls for Whites

    Wednesday, May 20, 2015
The change was so dramatic, researchers weren’t sure they had crunched the numbers correctly. “I was shocked, I’ll be honest with you,” said epidemiologist Jeffrey Bridge. “I looked at it and I thought, ‘Did we do the analysis correctly? I thought we had made a mistake.’" Explanations included “that black children are more likely to be exposed to violence and traumatic stress...[have] early onset of puberty" and more likely to be subject to “aggressive school discipline.”   read more

  • Weapons Companies Profit from Fear of Iran Campaign

    Tuesday, May 19, 2015
Iran has been a great bogeyman for American merchants of war by helping boost billions of dollars in military sales to oil-rich states in the Middle East. In the last five years, U.S. arms purchases by Gulf Arab countries have skyrocketed by 70%. Saudi Arabia alone has paid out $90 billion to American arms firms in that time. U.S. defense contractors have benefited by selling weapons systems and munitions to Persian Gulf countries that have worried about Iranian military plans in the region.   read more
  • NSA Program has Long Converted Voice to Searchable Text

    Tuesday, May 19, 2015
The NSA has the ability to transcribe phone call conversations into written—and searchable—formats. Documents provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed that the NSA 10 years ago developed a system to search recorded phone conversations and “even use sophisticated algorithms to flag conversations of interest." This “has happened with no apparent public oversight, hearings or legislative action. Congress hasn’t shown signs of even knowing that it’s going on,” said The Intercept.   read more
  • Victims of Military Sexual Assault much more Likely to Face Retaliation than Accused are to Face Conviction

    Tuesday, May 19, 2015
A new HRW report says 62% of military personnel who experienced unwanted sexual contact and reported it to military superiors were retaliated against in fiscal year 2014. In comparison, only 5% of military sexual assault cases in FY 2014 resulted in a conviction. This means victims were 12 times more likely to suffer for speaking out than attackers were to be punished. It is no wonder that only 25% of victims report sexual assaults to military authorities.   read more

    Tuesday, May 19, 2015
The ban on military gear is by no means all-encompassing. Law enforcement will still have access to plenty of other military goods, including wheeled armored vehicles, manned aircraft, drones, specialized firearms, explosives, battering rams and riot batons, helmets and shields. These and other items will, however, come under stricter controls, including new requirements that police departments get approval from local government bodies before requesting military equipment from Washington.   read more
