In eight years of warfare, the Iraq campaign has cost the United States many of its youngest men. Almost 1,300 of the more than 4,400 American troops killed in the Iraq war have been aged 18 to 21. More than half were in the lowest enlisted ranks. Adding to this loss are the thousands of others who were wounded, many with permanent physical disabilities, and still thousands more suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
