Only 6% of Scientists Identify as Republicans
Saturday, July 11, 2009
It would appear that the Republican Party has alienated yet another group of voters: scientists. A recent survey conducted by The Pew Research Center for People & the Press found only 6% of more than 2,500 scientists polled identified themselves as being Republican. Fifty five percent called themselves Democrats and 32% independents.
Although scientists have not traditionally been viewed as an unusually liberal bunch, more than half now call themselves liberals. Perhaps there is a clue to this transformation in another poll result: 77% of scientists believe that while George W. Bush was president, government scientists were not allowed to report research results that conflicted with the views of his administration.
