Mike McTimoney has the distinction of becoming the first Tweeter-in-residence in the United Kingdom, following his hiring by the town of Darlington in County Durham in the northeast of England. McTimoney, an IT lecturer at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, will be paid £140 (about $230) annually to update the Twitter world with news and goings-on about the town. Local officials are hoping McTimoney, who tweets under the name TheDarloBard, will become part of the growing Twitterati and expand awareness about Darlington, complimenting the Darlington Experiment 2.0, a website where townsfolk can post videos, photographs and messages.
