Ron Paul Introduces Bill to Repeal Indefinite Detention of Americans

Friday, January 20, 2012
Ron Paul
Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul took a break from his campaign to come out in opposition to the bill signed into law by President Barack Obama on New Year’s Eve that allows the indefinite detention of any terrorism suspect, including Americans arrested in the U.S.

Speaking from the floor of the U.S. House, Paul lashed out at a provision in the latest defense authorization bill that permits the government to imprison without trial anyone who has "substantially supported al Qaeda, the Taliban, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States." This would include U.S. citizens arrested anywhere in the world.

According to Paul, the legislation could undermine the right to due process and allow the military to act "as a kind of police force on U.S. soil, apprehending terror suspects, including Americans, and whisking them off to an undisclosed location indefinitely."

When he approved the bill, Obama issued a signing statement claiming that his administration would not allow the military to detain Americans indefinitely.  Civil libertarians from both the left and the right were, however, appalled by Obama’s “Trust me; I won’t do it” position, pointing out that even if Obama kept his promise, there is no guarantee that future presidents won’t imprison Americans and others indefinitely without trial or even without charge.

The wording of the act, although carefully phrased, is nonetheless clear, and allows the president of the United States to define “supporters” of terrorism as he sees fit and to imprison whomever he chooses.

i suddenly forget everything else from his campaign, and must admit, he is clearly the better of the crop. from the firing squad of nominees he is the most eloquent and mild mannered. not my ideal choice, but i couldn't hope for anyone better to screw me over.

this is a bit much power to hand to the executive branch. this is a reason for the competing branches of government. i support the removal of the law allowing indefinite detention of americans. further, i support more openness and popular scientific education of the methods of practical execution of government. thank you for your time. sparkyplugclean.

dear dubstep completely correct..but..how long before you get a trial? the fact that your an american, been jailed, doesn't mean for a speedy trial nor a fair one. how do u know we wont be under military jurisdiction and water ...boarded.. something like that.. anyways..no complaints on anything raul paul does. hes the only one with a straight mind and not being paid by "people"/corporations or has any on his advisory board...mitt romney has them..and obama is getting supported by gold..men..sachs.. i'm not a politician..but our politicians of today have to many interests that dont concide with america's population. atleast completely. god bless u me,,,and everyone else...personally i hope he wins the presidential election. hope u do too. @jess obama and bush both have already taken the power of indefinate detention this bill codifies it into law. but ndaa does codify into law the ability indefinitely detain u.s. citizens as it says in the first provision — section (a)"detention under the law of war without trial until the end of hostilities" and "includes the authority for the armed forces of the united states to detain covered persons" the defintion of covered persons is so vague as to include u.s. citizens

ron paul is talking about a bill named h.r. 1540. the specific part he's interested in is page 265 and 266 pdf: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/bills-112hr1540enr/pdf/bills-112hr1540enr.pdf this is congressman paul's official statement: http://paul.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1941%3astatement-introducing-repeal-of-sec-1021-of-national-defense-authorization-act-for-fiscal-year-2012&catid=16%3aspeeches&itemid=1 ---------------- summary: ron paul believes if you are an american, you should not be jailed by the us military for any reason. this bill states that anyone, including american citizens, that are terrorists, part of the taliban, part of al-queda, took part in plotting the september 11, 2001 attacks can be jailed first, then put to trial.

jfk really tried to warn all of us. "all truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them." -galileo in jfk’s own words he is trying to warn the u.s. about a monolithic & ruthless conspiracy around the world where he asked the media to help alert the american people. the media did not alert the american people. the evil continues!!! jfk "the president and the press," before the american newspaper publishers association, 27 april 1961 www.youtube.com/watch?v=pde6qcqfu4c ron paul 2012

this looks like a political stunt during campaign season since it's not the ndaa provisions that gives the executive branch - it's the 2001 aumf (upheld by courts and by the supreme court in the hamdi case) from the ndaa bill - "the language in the (ndaa) bill that relates to the detention authority as far as us citizens and permanent residents are concerned is, “nothing in this section shall be construed to affect existing law or authorities relating to the detention of united states citizens, lawful resident aliens of the united states, or any other persons who are captured or arrested in the united states.” also, a last minute compromise amendment adopted in the senate, whose language was retained in the final bill, leaves it up to the courts to decide if the president has that power, should a future president try to exercise it. but if a future president does try to assert the authority to detain an american citizen without charge or trial, it won’t be based on the authority in this bill. so paul is wrong on both counts

democrats are utterly terrified obama will have to run against paul in the general election. let's face it, those other three guys are obama, with a little tinkering around the edges. the only problem paul has is marginalization and constant media attacks. this is perfectly understandable because papers and tv stations aren't owned by some guy now - they're owned by 6 giant corporations that control over 90% of the airwaves and big chunks of the internet. look at the comments on any story - you'll see the paul support there. what if this is the last chance you'll have to prevent the collapse of the dollar? our infrastructure can't function without oil and oil is denominated now in dollars. what happens when people stop accepting them? no oil means no diesel. no diesel means no trucking. no trucking means no food - most supermarkets carry only 3 days' inventory. let's say it only takes a couple months to find a new supply, what do you think will happen in a city with 10 million starving people, people who've never gone hungry a day in their lives? armageddon.

its even more of an issue for the rest of us in countries that have us military bases. are we to be whisked away in the middle of the night for reasons undisclosed? if this law isn't repealed the whole world will quickly develop a shoot americans first, ask questions later attitude. every us citizen will have a bullseye painted on them because they could, for all we know, be a member of the military and could, without any real justification put us in prison for life. this is why, we suspect, your government is pushing to have a permanent military base in australia, your alleged ally. its not just an american police state being created, its a world police state.
