Muammar al-Gaddafi, the dictator of Libya for the last 42 years, has been killed by rebels in the city of Sirte. Conflicting versions claim that he was either wounded or killed. Gaddafi seized power in the North African nation of Libya in 1969 when he was only 27 years old.

A brutal ruler who supported terrorism and had opponents murdered, Gaddafi was actually better known for his bizarre behavior. A few examples:

·       In 1977, Gaddafi ordered all Libyans to raise chickens, even urban dwellers who lived in apartments.
·       Inspired by Mao Zedong’s Little Red Book, Gaddafi compiled his philosophy into the Green Book. In the tent he used for entertaining guests, he had his favorite thoughts from the Green Book embroidered into the fabric of the walls.
·       He also had his thoughts put to a disco beat and broadcast as music videos on Libyan television. Among the catchy lyrics from the song, “The Third Universal Theory”:
The universal theory has seen the light,
Bringing mankind peace and delight,
The tree, oh, of justice, people’s rule and socialism,
Completely different from laissez-faire and capitalism,
Based on religion and nationalism.
·       Gaddafi compiled a photo album with pictures of Condoleezza Rice.
·       During a visit to Rome in 2009, he hired 200 young women, 5’7’’ or taller, to listen to him give a speech in praise of Islam.

no doubting he was a wacky narcissist. do we murder people for that now? i'd like to see some evidence proving (not suggesting) his brutality and support of terrorism. i'm assuming you're aware that the "witnesses" who testified against gadhafi in the lockerbie disaster were each paid 4 million frns by the u.s. gubmint, and that they have since recanted their testimony. 1.7 million libyans gathered to protest he nato invasion before it started. that's 1/3 of the entire nation that actually hit the street on kadhafi's behalf. libyans enjoyed a high standard of living...higher than that of saudi arabia. so why did america, behind the smokescreen of nato, invade and overthrow libya's government? what was the threat? answer: oil? nope. african gold dinar? yes.

i have absolutely no evidence to show that the 1971 woody allen comedy, bananas, featuring a scene of the new president in the fictitious south american country of san marcos, had a central and lasting influence on the ruling style of col. moammar gaddafi. in bananas, el presidente, who has just won a coup against the previous dictator, gives a victory speech to the population in which he announces that the new state language will be swedish and that all citizens will now be required to change their underwear every half hour as well as wear it on the outside, "so we can check." my unverifiable theory is that gaddafi screened the film in his palace (he had assumed control of libya in 1969.) and mistook the comedy for a documentary, what with the actual sportscaster howard cossell playing himself at the beginning and end of the film. the impressionable dictator accepted as fact the irrational actions of el presidente and decided to model his own behavior on that character. bad decision, but none of his intimidated aides would tell him otherwise! what followed has not been a laughing matter for the libyan population who have been forced to experience 40 years of a real bananas existence. -from thinking out loud, march 8, 2011, http://marperl.blogspot.com/2011/03/gadhafis-behavior-explained.html
