Threats against Members of Congress Triple

Thursday, May 27, 2010

Anger towards Congress has escalated into considerably more threats against senators and representatives. Senate Sergeant at Arms Terrance Gainer told Politico that threats were up 300% during the opening months of 2010.

Those receiving death threats include Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) and Representatives Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) and Heath Schuler (D-North Carolina). Others told they would be physically harmed were Senators John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Blanche Lincoln (D-Arkansas) and Representatives Ciro Rodriguez (D-Texas) and Zoe Lofgren (D-California).

Capitol Police have increased bike patrols around House and Senate office buildings. They’ve also doubled the number of bomb sweeps, in part because of the increase in suspicious packages sent to lawmakers, up from 34 in 2008 to 142 in 2009.
