Stanilas Ocloo, Togolese sports journalist killed in Angola January 9, 2010

Last year was truly deadly for reporters around the world, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), which says 70 journalists were killed while doing their jobs. Almost half of all fatalities took place in the Philippines, where 29 were murdered in a single ambush; altogether 32 died in the country in 2009. Other dangerous countries for the media were Somalia (with nine killed), Iraq (four), Pakistan (four) and Russia

(three). Three more journalists have already been killed in 2010.

CPJ said another 24 journalists lost their lives last year around the globe, but it was unclear whether those were related to reporting.

The group’s report provides information on imprisoned reporters as well, noting that 136 media people were locked up as of December 1, 2009, an increase of 11 from the previous year. Iran was singled out as the worst offender, with more than 90 arrests in 2009; at least 23 writers and editors were still being held at the time the report was published. China was another major offender, throwing 24 journalists behind bars.
