Bachmann, Santorum Sign Pledge That Recalled the Good Old Days When Slavery Kept Families Together

Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum

To demonstrate her conservative bona fides with Iowa voters, Republican Michele Bachmann became the first presidential candidate to sign a pledge by a religious right group, The Family Leader, that contains 14 points addressing everything from opposing same-sex marriage to rejecting Islamic law. Rick Santorum followed closely behind. The pledge also included the following paragraph:

“Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born in to slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA’s first African-American President.”

At least, the pledge’s preamble used to include that paragraph. Within a few days of its July 7 publication, the pledge was scrubbed of the slavery reference that implied African-American children were better off in the 1800s than now, under President Barack Obama.

Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty said he was reviewing the document. Republicans have until August 1 to sign the pledge.

divorce has been a problem for some time in the u.s., long before president obama was elected president. i can only infer from their pledge statement that even more than adhering to a virtuous code of conduct, there is a wish that we should go back to the good old days when president obama and his family would have been ensalved. do you think michele bachman should sign a statement acknowledging that there were fewer divorces when women didn't have the right to vote? how can the u.s. succeed in a competitive international forum when such in fighting exists! i do hope american's can let go of their selfishness and bigotry. lets focus on educating our children, all of our children, for tomorrow!
