Army Prepares to Fire 8,700 Civilians

Monday, August 08, 2011
With the Department of Defense expected to have fewer resources next year, the U.S. Army has announced plans to eliminate more than 8,700 civilian jobs by the end of September 2012.

Army officials have instructed various commands to figure out how to trim a total of 8,741 positions, out of more than 106,000 employees (the Army actually employs a total of 343,815 civilians, including foreign nationals).

About 80% of the cuts will impact the Installation Management Command, which helps military families; the Army Materiel Command, which develops, buys and maintains materiel; the Training and Doctrine Command, which trains “leaders”; and the Army Department Headquarters.

Not surprisingly, the union representing Army civilian employees, the American Federation of Government Employees, intends to fight the reductions.
