Ambassador to Singapore: Who is David Adelman?

An early political supporter of President Barack Obama during the 2008 campaign, David I. Adelman became U.S. ambassador to Singapore on April 29, 2010.
 
Born in New York City, Adelman grew up in Atlanta. The son of a hardware salesman and a nurse at Crawford Long Hospital, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia (1986), Juris Doctor from Emory University School of Law (1989) and master’s degree from Georgia State University (1995).
 
Prior to entering private practice, Adelman was an assistant attorney general in Georgia for three years.
 
In 1993, he joined the firm Sutherland Asbill and Brennan LLP, where he represented energy and communications companies. He remained with the firm, becoming a partner, until winning election to the George state Senate in 2002 as a Democrat.
 
During his eight years as a state senator, Adelman served as Democratic Whip and as chairman of the Senate Urban Affairs Committee. He also served as chairman of the bipartisan Georgia Code Revision Commission, and was appointed by the chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court to serve on the Commission on Children, Marriage and Family Law.
 
He resigned from the state Senate in 2010 after receiving his ambassadorial appointment.
 
 
Adelman’s wife, Caroline, served as Georgia Press Secretary for the Democratic presidential campaigns of 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004. During the 2008 campaign, she was press lead for Obama during the primaries and Georgia Communications Director during the general election. The Adelmans have three children.
