If Haitians displaced by the earthquake are willing to try life on a different continent, there is a new home awaiting them in Senegal. President Abdoulaye Wade has offered to give Haitians land in his African nation, after first promising to donate $500,000 to the relief cause. Wade considers inhabitants of Haiti sons and daughters of Africa because the country was founded by slaves, including some from Senegal. Haitians who relocate will be given parcels of land, and if enough show up, an entire region of the country may be set aside for them, according to Senegalese officials. As precedent, Wade cited the return of emancipated slaves from the United States to Liberia in the early 19th century.
