Davi Dohm
Chad Spurley, convicted of manslaughter while driving drunk, won’t be attending his mother’s funeral, because he’s still in prison for the crime. This fact has upset, of all people, the mother of Spurley’s victim.
Davi Dohm, 36, of Madison, Wisconsin, left behind a mother, Sue Dohm, after he was killed by Spurley in April 2011. Sue Dohm grieved the loss of her son, and later complained that Spurley’s punishment—3 1/2 years in prison, followed by 6 1/2 years on parole—wasn’t strong enough.
“He took a very productive life away from society. To me, three years in prison is a cakewalk. It’s a blink of an eye compared to a whole lifetime,” she previously told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
But now Dohm is seeing things differently. After hearing that Spurley’s mother had died from cancer, Dohm expressed regret that the convicted killer can’t attend Camy Nelson’s burial service.
“That seems rather cold and heartless to me and everyone I have talked to about this issue. He is a prisoner, but he’s still a human being, a person,” she wrote last week in an email to the Journal Sentinel.
