Many of those making the most money among U.S. government civil servants have an MD after their names, according to WikiOrgCharts.

Using data obtained from federal agencies, the company compiled a list of the top 1,000 earners in Washington, DC, who are not political appointees. The salaries of those on the list range from $216,345 to $350,000.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Indian Health Service dominate the list’s top 28 slots, and health-related employees occupy the first 67 spots.

No. 1 on the list is Dr. Electron Kebebew ($350,000), a medical officer at the NIH regarded by his peers as a leader in cancer research. Another NIH doctor also holds down the No. 3 spot, Dr. Anthony Fauci ($335,000), who has directed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for the last 27 years. In second place is Dr. Randolph Copeland, an experienced orthopedic surgeon with the Indian Health Service in New Mexico.

The best-paid non-health-related federal employee in the past year was Henry Krakowski, who was pulling down an annual salary of $262,104 as the head of air traffic control operations for the Federal Aviation Administration until he was forced to resign in April after a series of incidents in which air traffic controllers fell asleep on the job.
