Lobbying Firm Prepares to Help Corporations Take Advantage of Supreme Court Election Ruling

Sunday, February 21, 2010

Corporations wondering how to take advantage of their newfound power following the Citizens United ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court can turn to K&L Gates, one of Washington, DC’s biggest lobbying firms. In the wake of the high court’s decision to eliminate campaign finance restrictions on companies and unions, K&L Gates has published a tip sheet explaining how businesses can avoid “public scrutiny” and embarrassing disclosures by paying lobbying groups or trade associations to support or oppose candidates running for office. The firm’s memo also discusses the fact that American subsidiaries of foreign companies can now donate to campaigns as long as “the foreign parent does not finance US political activities and no foreign national participates in any decision to make expenditures.”
