Iraq is no longer the most costly foreign policy priority of the United States. Thanks to the withdrawal of troops from Iraq, and the continued build-up of forces in Afghanistan, the latter is now costing $6.7 billion a month, compared to $5.5 billion for the former. Only last year the war in Iraq was twice as expensive as the Afghanistan campaign. Altogether, the two wars have so far drained more than $1 trillion from the United States, when factoring in not only direct war costs but also care for veterans and foreign aid to support the Iraqi and Afghan regimes.
