Blake Maggart with a Doll of His Father, Brandon

You would think with all the hoopla surrounding the end of the U.S. “combat mission” in Iraq that Americans are no longer fighting a war there. Unfortunately, the reality is much different. Americans are still being killed in Iraq.

Sgt. Brandon Maggart, 24, of Kirkville, Missouri, sadly became the first soldier to die in Iraq since the alleged end of combat. On Sunday, August 22, three days after the last combat brigade supposedly left Iraq, Maggart died of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit in Basra. This was his second deployment to Iraq. He was due home on leave in September and scheduled to return to the States for good in January. He leaves behind a wife, Teresa; a 3-year-old son, Blake; and his parents, Teddy and Beth.
