It took 321 days for the FBI to fill the 10th spot on their Ten Most Wanted List left open by the arrest last year of Whitey Bulger…but only one day to close the case. Adam Mayes’ inclusion on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s fugitive list was short-lived.
FBI officials announced on Wednesday that Mayes was added to the list after kidnapping a mother and her three daughters in Tennessee late last month.
The manhunt ended the next day (May 10) when police caught up to Mayes, who shot himself in the head as officers closed in.
The mother and one of the girls were found murdered. The two remaining girls survived the ordeal.
Mayes abducted Jo Ann Bain and her three children on April 27. The kidnapper was allegedly aided by his wife, Teresa Mayes, and his mother, Mary Frances Mayes.
Teresa Mayes has been charged with six felony counts — two first-degree murder charges and four especially aggravated kidnapping charges.
Mary Frances Mayes faces charges of conspiracy to commit especially aggravated kidnapping.
Adam Mayes was the 496th person to be placed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, which was established in March 1950.
