President Barack Obama’s decision to dump the Bush administration’s plan to deploy a missile defense system in Eastern Europe was great news for defense contractor Raytheon. Instead of deploying missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic at a cost of $70 million per interceptor, the Obama administration will opt for a sea- and land-based missile defense that will utilize Raytheon’s SM-3 program and other interceptors to thwart potential attacks from Iran. The company’s Patriot missiles cost about $3 million a piece, while its SM-3 will cost the U.S. between $10 million and $15 million per missile.
