America’s honey industry is pleading with the Food and Drug Administration to create national standards for the sweet product in order to curb China’s efforts to dominate the U.S. market. Lobbyists and members of Congress believe China has been sneaking millions of pounds of honey into the U.S. through third-party countries, including India, Malaysia, Taiwan and Indonesia. These nations do not actually produce significant quantities of honey, so it is assumed that the bee product is really coming from China, which then rebrands the point of origin to avoid anti-dumping tariffs.
In 2009, 200 million pounds of honey were imported, mostly from Asian countries, surpassing the 144 million pounds that American beekeepers produced.
