Mexican Police Shut Down Drug Smuggling Tunnel Complete with Elevator
As drug-smuggling tunnels go, the one discovered on Wednesday in Tijuana was not the first in the border town ripe with narcotics trafficking. But it was unusual for having its own elevator. The 1,000-foot tunnel was still under construction when Mexican police arrested 13 employees of the Arellano Felix drug cartel working on the underground passage aimed for the U.S. border. Law enforcement said the tunnel was equipped “with the most advanced technology and was presumably going to be used to smuggle drugs, arms and people into the United States.” The tunnel began in a warehouse in the border city of Tijuana, went at least 30 yards underground and extended about 850 feet into U.S. territory. Although it was not completed, it already had electricity, lighting and a ventilation system.
