Emma takes aim at Emily

The U.S. Social Security Administration has released the top 1000 names for boys and girls born in the United States; in fact, its website provides the rankings of each name from as far back as 1882. In 2008, Emma finally hit #1, dethroning Emily, which had stayed at the top the last 12 years. The name Emma has had quite a history in the rankings: in 1882, it was #3, but over the next 126 years, it drastically lost and then regained popularity, bottoming out at #462 in 1976, before climbing back up the charts. Emma jumped especially in the year 2002, when Rachel of the TV show Friends named her newborn Emma Geller Green. This fictional event helped Emma jump to #4, cracking the top ten for the first time since the 19th century. The reigning champion of boys’ names for the last ten years, Jacob, remains at the top for 2008.

The Social Security Popular Baby Names database is filled with interesting signs of the times. For example, the name Shaquille broke into the top 1000 in 1991, peaked at #181 in 1993, and drifted off the list after 1996. Kobe, on the other hand, first made the list in 1997 and has remained in the top 1000 ever since, although it has never achieved as high a ranking as Shaquille.
