Veterans May Have Been Exposed to AIDS at St. Louis VA Hospital During Dental Treatment

Friday, July 02, 2010

More than 1,800 veterans were potentially exposed to HIV and hepatitis at the St. Louis Veterans Affairs Medical Center thanks to poorly sanitized dental equipment. The exposure, which VA officials insisted was “low risk,” took place over a year before an inspection team discovered that the center’s dental operation was failing to clean equipment according to accepted standards.

The medical center sent out letters to 1,812 patients informing them of the mishap and offered free testing to determine if anyone contracted HIV or hepatitis B or C. Some veterans were angered by the news and the poor customer service treatment they received when they called the hospital to learn more.

One veteran said the VA official “talked to me like he was telling me how to change my oil. He was so insensitive.” Another remarked: “He tells me that the VA gives out free condoms. Imagine him telling me that when this has happened. I was shocked. Something like this I don’t need. Nobody needs it.”

Believe it or not- they fired the whistleblower- This is typical VA incompetence. Recently, I came across a report of an investigation by the VA Inspector General regarding the delay of cancer treatment for a patient at Zablocki VAMC. SEE : http://www4.va.gov/oig/54/reports/VAOIG-09-01348-49.pdf It appears that gross medical malpractice was performed by 2 radiologists, a radiation oncologist, a surgeon , and an internal medicine doctor, all of whom are faculty at Medical College of Wisconsin. You might say a comedy of medical errors. Also, why does the Inspector General have to be called to investigate, could several of these docs been involved in a coverup? Veterans sacrifice their lives at the war front and to get this type of care at home is immoral.

Who will be claimed as responsible for this?

Your title says "Illinois" but, this incident occurred in St. Louis, MISSOURI. (but... of the 1812 veterans affected, there were about 485 who lived "across the river" in Illinois.) The actual VA facility that you are speaking of is the VA Medical Center St. Louis-John Cochran Division.
