Coast Guard Puts Out Call for Private Sector Solutions to Oil Spill

Sunday, June 13, 2010

Perhaps bowing to public pressure to stop the oil spill, the U.S. Coast Guard has decided to reverse its earlier position to not reach out to the private sector for solutions to the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster. The Coast Guard Research and Development Center, along with other federal offices, put out a notice on Friday asking vendors, scientists, government laboratories and nonprofits to submit proposals for stopping, containing and cleaning up the largest offshore oil spill in American history.

Although the Coast Guard is seeking immediate solutions, it will accept submissions for one year—a possible indication that the agency believes clean-up efforts may extend beyond the fall, which is the current timeframe that Admiral Thad Allen has discussed.

As a former employee of Chevron, I spent several years on production platforms in the gulf of mexico. I have a proposal to stop the leaking well but it depends on the design of the blowout preventers. If the BOP has a flanged connection at the top possibly the robots could be used to remove or cut the studs and nuts loose to remove the riser and then a fully open valve could be stabbed on top of the flange. The valve could be modified with handles or have a spool attached with handles (which would also add weight) to help position the valve. Possibly the use of 3 foot long studs/nuts could be used in conjunction to get the valve in position and then draw the valve down tight onto the flange. Once drawn down the valve could closed and the well pumped into and killed. there are a lot of ifs and working at that depth makes for unimaginable problems, but I hope this idea has some merit.

Sirs: I understand the need to have a method to help "directionalize" the floating Crude Above and Below slowly rising in the Layer Columns of sea water. What worked for me was the use of "tiny" Air Bubbles blown Out of Disfusors with holes to help bring and cause the salt in ocean water (TDS) to Rise to higher levels of the column Layers near the suface. What could be utilzied is Boat mounted portable large volume Air compressors to blow Air InTo 3" rubber hose with small holes drilled in it then rolled "Up" onto Large Reels to be reeled out to fall to or near the Ocean Floor up to 2 miles long. "The Bubble Air Fence" Created will help prevent the Floating Globs Below and at the surface from migrating and could help Slow down the Creeping Crude until other "More effective methods" are deployed. The rising Bubbles also Help Bring the very small Globs to the surface to be more efficiently collected and would enhance the current floating Booms performance. Equipment needed is Boats with Yard Booms and personal familar with Shrimping or Fishing. Sincerely, Charles B. Stop the spill by anchoring around the pipe deep into the sea floor, use whatever engineered materials strong enough to be winched tight over the pipe end, teflon, steel mesh, titanium etc. Have the large containment housing ready to lower down over top the pipe end. There you have it and I hope this was helpful. I cant believe someone has not already thought of this! getr done! before this kills every thing in the Gulf.
