The ACLU, which was contesting Florida police’s use of surveillance technology, got quite the surprise recently when federal marshals unexpectedly confiscated police records pertaining to the controversial program that had been requested by the ACLU. 52.4% of male doctors who made political contributions did so to the GOP during 2011-2012, while only 23.6% of women doctors chose the Republicans. While money from physicians has shifted away from the Republican Party, the profession’s overall political giving has increased dramatically. Over the course of two decades, doctors’ contributions jumped from $20 million to $189 million, according to the study.   read more

Szema’s research shows that 14% of service members who had deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan suffered from new-onset respiratory issues. The dust could have been formed in the notorious burn pits used by the military to dispose of everything from plastics to computers to munitions. Chicago’s high-end suburb of Woodridge has been charging anyone who gets arrested within their community a $30 fee, which some consider unconstitutional. Jerry Markadonatos, for one, objected to the charge and filed a class action suit arguing it violated a person’s right of due process. When the defendant’s lawyer, Paul Rettberg, likened the cost to filing fees, Posner shot back: “Arrest is not a privilege. Paying for being arrested is ridiculous.”   read more

Last year 38-year-old Jason Heap, applied to become the U.S. Navy’s first humanist chaplain. Heap’s credentials include a degree in ecclesiastical history from Oxford, as well as years of teaching and spiritual guidance work. The Navy, however, turned him down. The chaplain corps in the U.S. military is currently dominated by Christians, particularly evangelicals. More than 90% of chaplains represent Christianity, and half of those are from evangelical denominations.   read more

Boulder police officer Sam Carter says he responded to calls of a wounded elk on January 1, 2013 in the neighborhood of Mapleton and put the animal down. Carter claimed it was a mercy killing. But some officers dispute Carter’s version of the incident. One Boulder man, Jonathan Bennett, even wrote a song about the killing. Part of the lyrics say “Gunned down for nothing, But his sovereign space, Wrong time, wrong place.” The late elk also has his own Facebook page: RIP Big Boy.   read more
