Name: Vaughn, John
Current Position: Former Chairman
John Vaughn was appointed Chairperson of the National Council on Disability in 2006. He began his 23-year career as an investment banker in the financial services industry in 1969, with Assistive Technology allowing him to continue working after he lost his sight to retinitis pigmentosa at the age of 32. In 1980, Vaughn first became involved in state and national advocacy organizations for the blind, and in 1991 he retired from investment banking. In 1994 Governor George Allen of Virginia appointed him head of the Department for the Visually Handicapped and in 1995 Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services. Vaughn served in that position until 1999, when he retired for a second time. In 2000 he began operating his own training and evaluation consulting business for the Florida Division of Blind Services, teaching blind people how to use access technology, In 2001, Florida Governor Jeb Bush appointed Vaughn to the Florida Rehabilitative Advisory Council for Blind Services, and he was then also appointed to U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Elaine Chao's Working Committee on Work Place Issues, in connection with President Bush's Twenty-first Century Workforce Initiative.
