Name: Tegnelia, James
Current Position: Former Director
Dr. James A. Tegnelia graduated from Georgetown University with a B.A. in physics, earned a masters in engineering from George Washington University, and a Ph.D. in physics from the Catholic University of America. His career in public service began in the army, where he served from 1968 to 1971, including a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam. After witnessing the efficacy of technological aids in combat first hand, he worked in the Army’s Night Vision Laboratory for five years before moving on to become a program manager and office director at the Defense Advanced Research Projects (DARPA), where in 1985 he became the acting director. He left DARPA for an excursion into the private sector, working in senior executive positions at Martin Marietta Corporation, Sandia National Laboratories, and Lockheed Martin. Tegnelia was appointed director of DTRA in 2005, and is also the director of Strategic Command Center for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction (SCC-WMD)
