Deepa Dasmunsi has served as the Union Minister of State for Urban Development since October 28, 2012. She is a member of Indian National Congress and represents Raiganj constituency of West Bengal in the current Lok Sabha.

 

Deepa Dasmunsi was born on July 15, 1960 in Kolkata, West Bengal.

 

Deepa completed her education at Rabindra Bharti University in Kolkata, West Bengal. She earned her M.A. in Dramatics from the university and was a gold-medalist at the post-graduate level. She started her career as an actress and has performed on stage since 1984. She has also been a television artist, costume designer and art director for television serials and short films. 

 

In 1996, she married Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, an Indian National Congress politician 15 years her senior who was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1971. He was re-elected 5 times from West Bengal's Rajganj constituency.

 

Deepa first forayed into politics in 2006 after winning the State Assembly polls from the Goalpokhar constituency of West Bengal's North Dinajpur district. She was a member of West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2009.

 

On October 12, 2008, a massive stroke and subsequent paralysis forced Priya Dasmunsi to retire from politics. After Priya Dasmunsi's stroke, his wife Deepa Dasmunsi decided to run for her husband’s seat while he remained in a coma. She won his Lok Sabha seat in 2009, an outcome many observers chalked up to sympathy.  

 

After being elected to the Lok Sabha in May 2009, she was appointed as a Member of

Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice in August 2009.

 

The Urban Development portfolio is her first experience as a Union minister.

 

Dasmunsi is a strong critic of the Trinamool Congress and its chief Mamata Banerjee. As a member of the West Bengal state legislative assembly, she constantly raised issues of law and order. She has often claimed that the State government has failed to deliver on its campaign promises.
